Our early departure from the graduation party did not sit well with the rest of the Burke clan. The next day, we all sensed a cool reception from my brother’s family. They were obviously hurt that we left early and interpreted what we did as a snub to Meredith. We left Michigan on rocky terms, and we hardly spoke to one another in the months that followed.

The summer went by quickly and in no time, the girls were headed back to school. Rachael was now a junior and driving. Sarah was now a sophomore.

Because of my work schedule, Mark continued being the parent who chauffeured the girls when he was not lending his car to Rachael. With every trip Mark made to shuttle the girls to after-school activities, events, or part-time jobs, he had the opportunity to be around their friends. And his outgoing personality, quick wit and uncanny knack of relating to younger generations were ever-present. He became familiar with the girls’ friends and classmates, knew them by name when I had no idea who they were. The girls thought he was the “cool” dad who knew just-the-right trendy things to say.

But Mark’s familiarity with other Valley View kids the girls did not hang out with I believe most likely led to the trouble we encountered that October, and was perhaps the precursor to the huge nightmare that would ensue the following month.

Halloween was still several weeks away, but we woke up numerous times to find our trees and bushes in our front yard draped with toilet paper. It was obvious we were being targeted because no one else had their landscaping dressed in toilet paper. The prank happened at least three times, and each time I was getting more and more annoyed to the point I was contemplating staying up all night to conduct my own surveillance. It was also embarrassing to have toilet paper hanging from our trees in the morning light, not to mention the aggravation of removing all of it, which Mark did. Our neighbors said nothing to us about it. After 2008, most everyone kept their distance from us.

The girls were not able to think of anyone they knew who might be doing this. They seemed worried about who would repeatedly pull off this prank.

I also got angry at Mark who seemed to shrug off what I considered vandalism.

“It’s probably some kids who wanted to brag that they t-peed Marisa Burke’s house,” he said casually. This calmed the girls. But I was more skeptical. His theory did not add up. And when our front door was hit with eggs one night, I exploded.

“What the hell is going on? Why is this only happening to us in the neighborhood and nobody else? It doesn’t make sense,” I screamed.
